Phoenix: The How and the Why

 

This book was conceived as a project of the twinning partnership between the cities of Coventry and Dresden, it is the result of co-operation between people from both cities. "Phoenix" brings something unique to the partnership's more than sixty-year history: co-operating on the translations meant continually engaging with, reflecting on, and rethinking a different linguistic view of the world and different cultural traditions.

The aim of  translating these poems is not least to work on a common culture of memory. The remembered past shapes our present and has an influence on the future. The volume presented here aims to continue the shared confrontation with the suffering of the past, oriented towards the future and under the seal of peace and reconciliation.
